Building boom in business, too

A CONSTRUCTION boom is sweeping Campbelltown, with developments valued at more than $70 million under way.
Hot on the heels of a predicted boom in residential property, as reported on last week's Macarthur Chronicle front page (pictured), commercial construction is also on the rise, with a multitude of cranes dominating the landscape.
Mayor Aaron Rule said "I'm always encouraged when I see people willing to invest in Campbelltown's future, but it has to be the right kind of development and not overly impact on our local community."
The most prominent development at the gateway of the city, on Grange Rd but seen from Campbelltown Rd, involves a huge crane working on the construction of a $10 million retail complex.
Crown Civil Engineering is building the complex, which is tipped to be completed in December. A Crown spokesman said the four-storey complex would cater to the needs of children. "It's basically going to be a shopping centre for kids with stores for toys and clothes as well as a medical centre," he said.
The second stage of the Mosaic Apartments in Leumeah is scheduled for completion in August or September this year.
The $22 million development was built on the old BBC site and comprises about 174 units, including garden apartments, town-houses and loft-style residences.
The four-stage development divided Campbelltown Council when it was approved in 2003 on then mayor Brenton Banfield's casting vote. A proposed $3 million shopping complex at Pembroke Rd, Leumeah, will service the new apartments and feature a supermarket and specialty shops.
In Queen St, Campbelltown, the former Ford dealership will be demolished and replaced with a four-storey retail factory outlet.
Saxon Developments will build the $25 million centre, including 593 car spaces and 77 shops.
It is expected to be completed late this year or early next year.
A $10.8 million development was also approved in 2006 for 90 residential allotments and associated roads and park areas located close to Leumeah Public School.
